General Notes: Husband - Uriah Best

He attended the public school, and as a youth was accustomed to all forms of farm labor. He, however, chose a trade and for seventeen years worked at carpentering, both as journeyman and contractor. He was a good mechanic and held a well established reputation in the township, as an honest, reliable contractor. He erected many of the dwellings and barns that dotted the landscape of Beaver township, some of them very pretentious modern homes. His work also included oil derricks and plants, which in the time of the oil boom rose all over the oil field.
In 1879 he purchased a farm of one hundred ten acres in Ashland township, on which he then resided. There were seven oil wells on the farm, which otherwise was cultivated and devoted to stock raising. In 1911 he erected a new and modern home on his farm and added other buildings needed, making the farm not only a very profitable, but a very attractive one. He was a Democrat in politics and in 1891-1894 served as commissioner of Clarion County. At various times he held practically every elective office in the township, including assessor and justice of the peace. He belonged to the Maccabees, and was a member of the Lutheran church, as was his wife.
