He was born in Belfast, Ireland, and after attaining his majority was for a time a soldier in the English army. He came to the United States in 1858-59 and settled in Warren, Pennsylvania. After his marriage he resided in that place for two years and then began oil operations, a business he followed throughout the oil country of western Pennsylvania.
