He and his brother George were partners as merchants for some time, but, believing that marked success was not possible for the two in the same place, Jacob went to the city of Baltimore, Maryland, engaged in the wholesale trade, and was on the high road to wealth and distinction as a merchant, when he was cut off by death at the early age of thirty-nine years.
