He passed his youth at home and in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, re-ceiving his education in the common schools. After marriage he and his wife settled on a farm in South Strabane township, Washington County. He was a prominent Re-publican, and in religious connection he and his family were active members of the U. P. Church.
