Kontisky To Present Paper in Holland
If there is a Pennsylvania Dutch "hex" for enhancing learning, the students in Dr. Gustav A. Konitzky's anthropology classes at Clarion University of Pennsylvania may be the beneficiaries this year.
A recent, unexpected discovery by Konitzky has helped him to focus new attention of the folklore of the Penn­sylvania Dutch.
Konitzky found a leather-bound book, written in German, at a flea market in Clarion County. The own­ers thought it was a diary. Konitzky's ability to read German enabled him to translate the old Gothic script into English. The book had the name Got­tlieb Oechsli (now spelled Exley) and the date 1855 written inside the cover.
"The book contained spells and some recipes," said Konitzky. "It was of extreme interest to me because it shows the survival of medieval prac­tices of "besprechen" or casting spells. It has spells for everything from epilepsy to teething pains to dry cows. The spells are derived from long ago practices of the European peasantry."
The discovery of the book helped Konitzky to plan a paper, "Spells and Folk Cures Among the 19th Century Pennsylvania Dutch," which he will present at the 46th International Con­gress Americanists scheduled July 4-8, 1988, in Amsterdam, Holland. Konitzky also used other field data as background for the paper.
In his paper, Konitzky, is using com­paritive material from contemporary practices to show that "hexing" is an expression of the world view of a pea­sant with roots in the rural com­munities of 18th Century Europe. Special attention is given to the con­tinuation of tradition patterns in the second half of the 20th Century.
At this point, he is the only representative from the 14 institu­tions in the State System of Higher Education scheduled to attend the conference. Konitzky has attended the Congress twice before, also presenting papers during the 1960s.
