General Notes: Husband - Henry Harrison "Harry" Berlin

Until the age of sixteen and a half he attended local public schools, working, meanwhile, on neighboring farms. In 1864 he enlisted for the duration of the Civil War, in Company H, Two Hundred and Eleventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, Ninth Corps, commanded by Captain Van Harding and Colonel H. Bodd. He participated in the battles of Petersburg and Fort Steadman, as well as the engagements before Richmond and various skirmishes. After three months' service he was promoted to mounted orderly to General Hartranft who, immediately after the war, became Governor of Pennsylvania.
After the war he returned to his old home, and in 1867 entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, working for four years as freight brakeman between Pittsburgh and Altoona. He was then made passenger brakeman and conductor and for another four years served in this dual capacity. At the end of that time he was transferred as ticket examiner to Union Station, Pittsburgh, where he remained until December 31, 1911, when he was placed by the company on their retired list, relinquishing his duties after forty-four years of continuous service.
While a staunch Republican, he never found time to accept office, though frequently urged to become a candidate. He was an active member of the United Presbyterian church.
