General Notes: Husband - Cornelius Elias Berlin

He obtained a common school education, and later attended Delmont Academy and Laird Institute. He remained at home farming for his father until twenty-six years of age, when he married and took his bride to the farm where they remained for three years. He then removed to a farm near Delmont, belonging to his father, where he lived for twenty-two years. In 1892 he built the first three houses and started the town of Export. In 1893 he moved in one of the houses and lived there. For two years he had a general store at Turtle Creek, run by his sons, and for one year in Export. He was interested in many public enterprises and companies during his busy life, but finally retired except for the business of the justice's office, in which he served four terms. He early became interested in politics and always figured prominently in Democratic councils in the county. He ran once for the legislature but was defeated by sixteen votes. He was not an office seeker, but had a lively interest in political and public affairs. In educational matters he always stood for better schools and served the township for three terms, nine years. He held membership in the I. O. O. F., Carmel Lodge, No. 542, of Delmont, B. P. O. E., of Greensburg, and K. of P., of Delmont.

For twenty-six years or more he held the office of justice of the peace and in that capacity "Squire" Berlin was a terror to evil doers, although he tempered justice with mercy. He early espoused the cause of the Democracy and was ever potent in party management and councils.
For thirty years or more he was a member of the Lutheran church; he was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Knights of Pythias.
