Robert G. Benton Sr.
Funeral services for Robert G. Benton Sr., 75, of 107 W. Sixth St., were conducted at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Jonathan H. Hutchinson Funeral Home.
Mr. Benson died at 11:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 1996, in the West Unit of Northwest Medical center at Franklin.
Rev. Byron Myers, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiated at the funeral services.
Interment was in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.
Born June 14, 1920, in Oil City, he was a son of the late Jesse V. Benton Sr. and the late Beulah N. Exley Benton.
Mr. Benton, a 1939 graduate of Oil City High School, had lived in Oil City all his life.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 aboard the U.S S. Grant He also served during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Benton worked for 22 years at Oilwell Division of U.S. Steel Corp. in Oil City and last worked for 22 years at Joy Manufacturing, in Franklin, where he was a purchasing agent before retiring in 1984.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Mr. Benton was a 50-year member of the Odd Fellows, serving in many posts. He was a past noble grand of Oil City IOOF Lodge 589 and also was financial secretary of the lodge.
He was a past district deputy grand patriarch of the grand encampment IOOF of Pennsylvania. He was scribe of the Oil City encampment of IOOF 182.
Mr. Benton was the assistant secretary and treasurer of Oil City Odd Fellows Hall Association, past president of Northwest Odd Fellows Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania and served on the board of the Odd Fellows Home of Western Pennsylvania in Meadville.
He enjoyed music and was an avid fisherman.
Mr. Benton was married June 25, 1949, to the former Jean Bickel, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Robert G. Benton Jr., and Thomas R. Benton, both of Oil City; two daughters, Mrs. Randall (Karen) Lehrian and Mrs. Ronald (Patty) Shiley Jr., both of Oil City, and 13 grandchildren.
He is also survived by one brother, Jeese V. Benton Jr., of Oil City; and two sisters, Marianne Gigliotti and Dorothy Howell, both of Toledo, Ohio.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Benton was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Brown
The family suggests memorial donations be made to Grace United Methodist Church in Oil City or to the West Unit of Northwest Medical Center at Franklin.
