He resided in West Salem, Mercer County, PA, after the autumn of 1834. He learned the shoemaker's trade, which he followed at Maysville for twenty years, but after the spring of 1882 he was engaged in farming. In the fall of 1862 he was drafted, and enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Sixty-ninth Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, and served nine months.
