General Notes: Husband - Capt. Alexander "Irish Alex" Culbertson

He was one of three Irish brothers, who settled in the Cumberland Valley in what is now Franklin County, Pennsylvania, at a very early period, certainly before 1743.

He formed a company for the defense of the frontier against the French and Indians after Braddock's defeat in 1755, and was killed in the action at Sideling Hill.

In 1730, three brothers, Alexander, Joseph and Samuel Culbertson, from near Ballymoyney, County Antrim, Ireland, emigrated to Pennsylvania and settled in Lancaster County. Long prior to the organization of Cumberland County, they located in what became Lurgan township, Franklin County, seven miles north of the present site of Chambersburg, and called their settlement "Culbertson's Row" after the home of their ancestors in the Province of Ulster, Ireland. [CRFP, 640]

He was a soldier in General Braddock's army in the unfortunate expedition against Fort DuQuesne, now Pittsburgh, in 1755, and when the settlements on the whole Pennsylvania frontier were threatened with annihilation by hordes of Indians, incited by the French and left unrestrained by the disorganization of the Provincial forces as a result of the defeat at Braddock's Field, he raised a company among his neighbors, of which he was commissioned Captain in Lieutenant-colonel Armstrong's Second Pennsylvania regiment and marched against the Indians. He was killed in a battle with the Indians at McCord's Point, Franklin County, April 2, 1756. He had probably held a captain's commission prior to this time, as we find him in command of a company at Fort Augusta, now Sunbury, in 1755. [CRFP, 640]

He emigrated to America between 1730-35, from Ballymoney, County Antrim, Ireland ("Irish Row") He settled about six miles from the town of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania [Lurgan Township, Cumberland County]. His farm and that of his two brothers and cousin (his cousin, Joseph, came over to America in 1743), together with the farms of their children, were called "Culbertson Row".
In 1755 Alexander Culbertson was commissioned Captain in Col. Burd's Regiment of Pennsylvania Provincial Troops in the French and Indian War. (See Pa. Arch. N. Ser. Vol. 11, p. 519). In April, 1756, he was a Captain in Lieut. Col. John Armstrong's Regt. (Second) of Pa. Prov. Troops and was killed near McCord's Fort, April 2, 1756.

General Notes: Wife - Margaret [Unk]

There is a record which gives her name Mary Duncan, b. Mar. 15, 1725, in Lancaster Co, PA; d. Aug. 3, 1794; married Nov. 4, 1740 in Lancaster Co, PA).
