The old Bell Mill was the scene of his birth, and this he later inherited from his father and operated with a gratifying degree of success for many years. He served his fellow-citizens as sheriff of Westmoreland county for a long period.
He served as sheriff of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, from 1862 to 1865.
