He accompanied his father from Ireland to the United States. He settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but remained there only a short time when he removed to Madison, Westmoreland County, where he was engaged in the mercantile business for many years.

After the death of her husband she went west and lived with her daughters in Monmouth, Illinois.
