General Notes: Husband - Joseph Neely

He learned the chair-making trade, and followed that business. In 1812 he enlisted in Capt. Drum’s company, to fight in defense of his country. He was under Colonel Cass, in General Hull’s command, was with Hull at his surrender, and was delivered over to the British. Was wounded at the battle of Brownstown. Was discharged from the service at the close of the war, and returned to his home and family. Was at Lake Erie when discharged, and with his comrades started for home on foot, traveling eleven days in the wilderness. Their rations being 1½ pints of meal each day, on the 11th day they ran out just before reaching the headwaters of Brokenstraw, where they stopped a week or two, then went down the river on a raft to Pittsburgh. He resumed his occupation in Greensburg, PA, which he continued until 1827, when he removed with his family to Venango County, and located near Dempseytown. He followed his business in Franklin for about 6 or 8 years, after which he followed farming.

He was a soldier during the war of 1812; he was wounded at the battle of Brownstown and was at Detroit when General Hull surrendered that post. He was one of a family of five sons and two daughters, all of whom except himself became residents of Ohio. Their parents emigrated from Ireland about 1770 and settled in Allegheny county, PA.

He was born Sept. 13, 1790, and came to America from Ireland with his parents, the family settling in Allegheny County, PA. He was a soldier during the war of 1812 and took part in a number of engagements, at the end of that conflict returning to Pennsylvania. He settled in Oakland Township, Venango County, PA, living there with his son Robert until his death. [CAB, 927]

He died in 1867. [HVC 1879, 613]
