General Notes: Husband - James McCray, Sr.

The original record of the McCray family in America seems to differ somewhat in details, one story stating that the family emigrated to America in 1777, landing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, later settling in Cumberland County, moving thence into Northumberland County, and finally on into northwestern Pennsylvania. Other versions of this story have them landing at Baltimore, Maryland, or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1784. Another version states the family emigrated from Washington County, Pennsylvania, to Erie County.

He and his wife were both of Scotch parentage, who removed to Mon-aghan County, Ireland, at the time of the persecution in Scotland. Some family histories claim that he came to America before the Revolutionary War and fought in that struggle. Others state that the family did not arrive until after the war.

Tradition and family history tells that he was married twice and had two children, Joseph and John, by his first marriage, who are believed to have stayed in Ireland.
