General Notes: Husband - Francis McMaster Wilson

He was born on the Sandy creek farm in French Creek Township, Venango County, PA, which his parents occupied until 1858. He had such educational advantages as the common schools of his day afforded, and helping his father about the tannery learned the business thoroughly in all its details, when a young man becoming associated with him as a member of the original firm of C. Wilson & Sons. From the time of his father’s retirement he had full charge of the business. He and his brother operated a saw and planing mill and continued the manufacture of sucker rods, their market extending beyond Pennsylvania into Ohio and West Virginia, and even Oklahoma. Their foreign shipments went as far as India and Japan. They had branches operating at Bradford, Titusville and Butler for the more convenient handling of the trade in the Pennsylvania fields, but the headquarters of the business was always maintained at Utica. Four men were employed regularly, modern methods of manufacture having evolved better and more economical processes of production. Wilson Brothers bought standing timber for their mill, and had it cut to order. Naturally, in their contact with the oil business they were tempted to undertake oil production on their own account, and they sank a few wells, but without results. Mr. Wilson devoted most of his time to practical affairs and took little recreation, but trout fishing was a favorite pastime of his leisure hours. He was a member of Lake Lodge No. 434, F. & A. M., at Sandy Lake, PA, beginning in 1873. On political questions he was a Democrat. [CAB, 591]
