General Notes: Husband - Matthew White

Whitestown was laid out by Edward White shortly after the death of his father, Matthew White, in 1812. Matthew White's log house was a tavern for many years. Being on the Franklin road, then a much frequented route, it was a place of general rendezvous during the War of 1812 and for many subsequent years. After Matthew White died, Edward White kept tavern, and years later, Matthew, son of Alexander White, kept hotel. Matthew White went out of the business on account of temperance agitation, and the village had no hotel for some twenty years.
