Civil War: he was a lieutenant in Company K, Fourth Pennsylvania Cavalry, wounded in front of Petersburg May 6, and died May 12. [HMC 1888, 1067]

Bates: John A. Welton, 2d Lt., mustered in Jan. 1, 1864, to serve 3 year term; Promoted to 2d Lt., March 8, '65—to Bvt. Capt., March 13, 1865—died April 21, 65, of wounds received Apr. 6, '65; buried in Cav. Corps Cem., Va.—Vet.

John Welton Post, No. 460, G. A. R., of Kennerdell, Venango County, Pennsylvania, was mustered in September, 1884, with nineteen members. Possibly named after him?
