He and his wife emi­grated from Ireland to America at an early day and located on Big Lick, in Clarion County, PA, where he operated a salt works.

He was a colonel in the war of 1812. He drilled the first salt well in Clarion County, at the mouth of Deer creek on the Clarion river.
