He received the usual common-school education; he then entered the Central Pennsylvania College of New Berlin, Pennsylvania, where he pursued his studies a few terms, completing the commercial course. Shortly afterward he married. He and his wife were religious people, devout members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, of Mifflinburg. He rented and resided on the old Walter homestead.
