He received his early education in the public schools of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, subsequently entering the Oakdale Academy; he then matriculated at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, receiving his degree of Doctor of Medicine in the class of 1900. On the completion of his course he came to Greensburg and began his practice there, specializing in anaesthesia. In August, 1917, he gave up his practice to join the American Expeditionary Forces, entering the United States Army with the rank of first lieutenant. He was first assigned to the Medical Officers' Training Camp at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia; then to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he was attached to the 410th Telegraph Battalion Signal Corps, as battalion surgeon. He served overseas one year, having sailed with the 410th in July, 1918, and received his honorable discharge July 9, 1919, with the rank of captain, Medical Corps. On returning to civilian life, he again took up his practice in Greensburg.
Dr. Walker was a Republican, and was deeply interested in civic, educational, and religious organizations. He served as president of the School Board of South Greensburg for a period of six years, and was a director of schools for twelve and a half years. He was a member of the Westmoreland County Medical Society, which he served as president; member of the Greensburg Academy of Medicine, of which also he was for a time president; and he was enrolled in the Pennsylvania State Medical Society. Dr. Walker was a Mason, being a member of Westmoreland Lodge, No. 518, Free and Accepted Masons; Urania Chapter, No. 192, Royal Arch Masons; Olivet Council, No. 13, Royal and Select Masters; and Kedron Commandery, No. 18, Knights Templar. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
