He was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and received his education in the common schools. For some years he worked among the farmers of his native county. In 1865 he enlisted in the One Hundred and Fourth Regiment, Sixth Army Corps, Pennsylvania Volunteers, for one year or during the war, and was mustered out of service August 25, 1865.
