He was born on the old family homestead in Middlesex township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and spent his entire life in his native township. He resided on the farm settled by his father, on which he had several producing oil wells. He was a trustee in the Presbyterian church, and was also the superintendent of the Sab­bath school. He was one of the enterprising and progressive farmers of his township, and always took an active interest in public matters.
