After her mother' death in 1853, resulting from a cold contracted when her infant daughter Clara Jane was baptised at the Barnet Creek Church, she lived with her grandparents in Pennsylvania. She attended the Airy View Academy, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, and the Moravian Seminary, Bethlehem.
