His father came from England; was a schoolteacher, and had a small farm in Versailles township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, whereon he reared his family; his wife was a Virginian, or English.

He settled on a farm in Patton about 1818. He was an elder in the Murrysville Presbyterian Church, afterward in the Cross Roads Church, and politically he was a republican. Joseph was the second of his nine children.
