General Notes: Husband - Hon. John Taylor

He was full six feet in height and remarkably active and strong. During the War of 1812, President Madison offered him, then a young man of twenty-one years, the appointment of lieutenant in the army. In those days the mails were at best very slow, and the letter informing him of the offer had been so long delayed in reaching young Taylor, that he immediately started from his father's house, on foot, for Bedford, then the nearest point at which he could reach a public conveyance to Washington City, making over sixty miles in a single day. When he reached Washington, he was too late; the place had been filled.
John Taylor had filled many public positions with great satisfaction to the people, among them, county treasurer, deputy surveyor, prothonotary, member of the legislature, associate judge, and surveyor general of the state. He, from his youth, took a decided part in politics, and was a democrat till the formation of the anti-masonic party, and with that party he united with the whigs.

He was one of the leading men of Indiana County, Pennsylvania, in his day, holding many of the highest offices, prothonotary, county treasurer, member of the Legislature, and associate judge. He was also deputy surveyor, and surveyor general of Pennsylvania, 1836 to 1840.
The first paper published in Indiana, Pennsylvania, was the American, and its first editor and founder was James McCahan, succeeded by James Moorhead. In 1829 its name was changed to the American and Whig. In 1832 Hon. John Taylor succeeded James Moorhead and changed the name of the paper to the Free Press.

General Notes: Wife - Mary Wilson

She was born and reared in the Presbyterian congregation of Rev. Snodgrass, Hanover, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
