He was reared and educated in Bethel township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and became one of the well-to-do farmers of his section.
He and his wife attended the Methodist Church, in which he was an active worker serving as deacon. Fraternally he was a member of White Rock Lodge, No. 979, I. O. O. F. On political questions he was a Democrat, and served as auditor of Bethel township.
