He was educated in the public schools of Rouseville, State Normal School at Edinboro, and Business University of Rochester, New York. He began for himself in producing oil.
He served once as clerk of Cornplanter township, Venango County, PA; was a member of the Second Presbyterian church, and voted the Republican ticket.
