He enlisted in the Eighty-fifth New York Volunteer Militia, and was in the seven days' battle in the retreat from Richmond with McClellan's army; he was captured at Florence, North Carolina, and was a prisoner at Andersonville for about six months; he was postmaster of the city of Milwaukee for two terms, appointed by President McKinley.
