He was born on the home farm in Smith township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. After marriage he and his wife continued to live on this farm, which consisted of 160 acres of valuable land, lying four miles south of Burgettstown. He successfully followed agricultural pursuits; in politics he was a lifelong Democrat.
