He was educated in the public schools, and remained on the farm with his parents until after arriving at full age. He married and soon after engaged in merchandising, first in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania, and then removed to Monongahela City, where he continued for some years in business. He was later associated with two other brothers in the lumber business.
