He attended the public and the high schools in Irwin, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Taking the liberal arts course at Washington and Jefferson College, he graduated there in 1914 with his degree of Bachelor of Arts, and his professional training was obtained at the Law School of the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated in the class of 1918, with his degree of Bachelor of Laws. He was admitted to the Supreme Court practice in 1918, and to the Westmoreland County bar the same year, when he established himself in general practice at Greensburg and Irwin. A Republican in politics, he was chosen to the duties of the office of assistant district attorney in 1922, in which office he served for four years.
Fraternally, Mr. Sowash was affiliated with the Shidle Lodge, No. 601, Free and Accepted Masons, of Irwin, Pennsylvania; and the Pittsburgh Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, thirty-second degree; he was a Noble of the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; a member of Jeannette Lodge, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and Irwin Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and also of the Kiwanis Club, of Irwin, and the Westmoreland County Bar Association. He was elected to the Irwin Borough Council in 1922, and secured one four-year term. His religious faith was that of the Presbyterian Church. His residence was Irwin, Pennsylvania.
