He was educated at Ursinus College, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1881, and two years afterward became a partner with his grandfather, Melchi Snively, at Shady Grove, Franklin County, and in March, 1886, became sole proprietor of the business.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature, 1895-96.
