He attended the district schools until he was fourteen years of age, when he became a pupil in the select school at Hadley, Pennsylvania, conducted by the well known teacher, Augusta Davidson, where he remained for two terms. He subsequently spent a like period at the Fredonia Institute. He then returned to his farming pursuits to assume the management of his father's farm, and subsequently became sole proprietor of the property. In connection with his general farming interests he conducted a prosperous stock business, which consisted largely of the breeding of standard horses. He was the owner of the standard bred stallion (registered) Hosack 34945, by Cecilian 17563, by Electioneer 125, first dam Homrique, by Red Wilkes 1749, by George Wilkes 519, second dam Mary, by Homer 1235. He was also the owner of the beautiful black Percheron stallion Marquis 32064, bred by W. A. McCoy & Sons, of Mercer, Pennsylvania. He also made a specialty of breeding cattle, having one of the best equipped stock farms for both of these purposes in Perry Township, Mercer County.
In his religious faith Mr. Beal was a member of the Methodist church of Clarks Mills, in which he served for many years as a steward, while in politics he was an unqualified Prohibitionist.

At the death of her father, when she was four years of age, she and her brother of two years were adopted by Johnson and Emily McCartney, farmers of Perry Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and both were reared and educated by the McCartneys.
