One source states that Stephen and Maria had fifteen children but only ten are listed in his will.

Her family came to America at the time of the Hessian im­portation.

She was possibly the daughter of Johan Peter and Catherine Elizabeth Stroup, who lived at the area now called Freeburg, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, which is the area were Stephen Smith settled.
