He traced his descent to Colonel Stephen Bayard, of Revolutionary fame, who settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and married the first white child born there. He was a descendant of Petros Bayard, one of the French Huguenots who came to New York with Peter Stuyvesant.
