General Notes: Husband - Gen. Arthur St. Clair


He was born in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland, and was educated at the University of Edinburgh, and studied medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. John Hunter. He was an Ensign in the 60th Foot, his commission dating from May 13, 1757. He came to America with Admiral Boscowan's fleet and served under General Jeffrey Amherst at the capture of Louisburg, Canada, in 1758, and under General James Wolfe at Quebec. He was commissioned a lieutenant April 17, 1759, and having resigned that position, he went to Ligonier Valley, Pennsylvania, where he settled in 1764. In 1770 he was appointed Surveyor of the District of Cumberland. He was a Justice of the Court of Quarter Sessions and of the Common Pleas; a member of the Proprietary Council; a Justice, Recorder and Clerk of the Orphans' Court and Prothonotary of Bedford and Westmoreland counties. In July, 1775, he was made Colonel of militia and secretary of the commission to treat with the Western tribes of Indians at Fort Pitt. He was made Colonel of the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment, January 3, 1776; appointed Brigadier-General, August 9, 1776. Having resigned all his civil offices in January, 1776, he was authorized to organize the New Jersey militia. He joined General Washington, in November, 1776, and participated in the battles of Trenton and Princeton. He was appointed Major-General, February 19, 1777, and, after serving as Adjutant-General of the army, he succeeded General Horatio Gates in command at Ticonderoga. He was with General Washington in the battle of the Brandywine, September 11, 1777. He assisted General John Sullivan in making the preparations for his expedition against the Six Nations. He was a commissioner to arrange a cartel with the British at Amboy, March 9, 1780. He was a member of the court-martial that condemned Major Andre, the British spy. He was commandant at West Point in October, 1780. He was actively engaged in raising troops and forwarding them to the South, and in October he joined Washington at Yorktown, a few days before the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. In November he was placed in command of a body of troops ordered to join General Nathaniel Green, and he remained in the South until 1782. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Councils of Censors in 1783; a delegate to the Continental Congress from November 2, 1785, until November 28, 1787, and its president in 1787; member of the American Philosophical Society; Governor of the Northwest Territory from October 5, 1787, until 1802; treated with the Indians at Fort Hamar in 1789; in 1790 fixed the seat of justice at Cincinnati, Ohio, named for the Society of the Cincinnati, of which he was an original member, and its president for Pennsylvania in 1783-89; appointed commander-in-chief of the army operating against the Indians, March 4, 1791.
