General Notes: Husband - Samuel Sterrett

He was brought up on the home farm and attended the district schools. When he was fifteen he entered the Airy View Academy, in Juniata County, Pennsylvania. Having made the necessary preparation, he began to teach school, and taught successfully several terms. In 1864 he went to Venango County, where he remained four years. He returned home in September, 1868, and resumed teaching; in the following spring he began farming, which occupation he followed successfully up to 1890. He then removed to Lilleyville, later Alfarata, where he then resided, finding great comfort in the many improvements he had made on his place. He was very progressive and was largely instrumental in securing the establishment of the graded schools at Alfarata. Mr. Sterrett exerted his influence in the establishment of the postoffice at Alfarata, in Decatur township, in 1891, and was the first postmaster there, appointed during President Harrison's administration; he held the office four years and a half. He was a Republican. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church at Vira, of which he was an elder.
