General Notes: Husband - Albert William Bauman

He grew up on the home farm [in Butler County, Pennsylvania?] and lived there all his life. He was educated in the public schools of Jefferson Township, went to Canton, Ohio, and worked in the Dueber Watch Works for about a year. A year in the Malleable Iron Works, Canton, followed; he went to New Castle, Pennsylvania, in 1889 and worked in the tin mill, and, in the meantime, he had married. Realizing that there was little opportunity for advancement in his occupation, he decided to begin life anew, and became an apprentice at the trade of carpenter at seventy-five cents a day in the employ of the New Castle Lumber and Construction Company. He continued with this concern as a journeyman until 1905, and after a year with another contractor, formed a partnership with Kenneth Emerson Smith, under the style of Smith & Bauman. Both men were masters of the theoretical principles that underlie modern building construction, and both, likewise, were practical mechanics. The firm took contracts within a radius of one hundred miles of New Castle, and erected many of the important buildings constructed in Lawrence County at that time. These included the plant of the Elliott-Blair Steel Company, and many schools and churches and public buildings. Early in 1925 they began work on the United Presbyterian Church in New Wilmington, which became the most pretentious stone church in Lawrence County. They also erected the North Street Church of Christ in Butler, Pennsylvania. Among other noteworthy buildings to their credit are the State and Strand theaters in New Castle, and the Union National Bank Building in that city. In normal times this construction work afforded employment to about fifty men. Mr. Bauman was a member of New Castle Lodge, No. 160, Knights of Pythias, and the Modern Woodmen of America. His recreation was hunting, and he belonged to Castle Camp.
The family attended the Central Christian Church of New Castle. Mr. Bauman was superintendent of the Sunday School. He was an elder in the church for many years and sang tenor in the choir for a long time. His fine voice made him a welcome amateur entertainer, and is often heard in the winter months at gatherings in private homes and halls.

He and his wife were the parents of ten children; seven of these reached maturity.
