General Notes: Husband - [Ancestor] Shirey

The Shirey family of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, is an old one in that region and still older in Pennsylvania, where it was founded as early as 1750 by men of that name who came over from France. The name was originally spelled Scheire and the ancestors of this particular family lived in France not far from the German border. It is said that there are families of the same name who came originally from Hesse-Cassel, they being brought to this country among the Hessian soldiers, hired by King George to fight the colonies. But whatever the truth of this statement, it does not apply to the Shireys of Westmoreland County. These, on the contrary, came as before stated, in 1750, on board a vessel which arrived in Philadelphia, when they were sold as slaves by the captain in lieu of passage money which they could not pay. They remained in actual service of this kind for a number of years, and then for a time we have no definite record of their life and experiences here. The founder is known to have been the father of four sons, who served in the Revolutionary war, but our first definite record of their residence after the service in Philadelphia, is found in Bucks County, where they apparently resided for a considerable period.
