He was a farmer and coke manufacturer, and in 1872 opened the first coke ovens in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, above Scottdale, and built and operated seventy ovens, being engaged in this occupation for ten years. In 1882 he sold out his business and removed to Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio, where he purchased two large farms, and there died.
