He was born on the original Sheakley homestead near Gettysburg, PA.
He was the first of his brothers to marry and establish a home, some of the family negroes remaining with him on the farm until 1845.
He went to the defense of Erie when threatened by the British in the War of 1812.
He commenced keeping tavern in Perry Township, Mercer County, PA, in 1820, in a hewed log-house, erected the previous year, on land later owned by his son, and entertainment was furnished at his place for more than thirty years.
