He was an active democrat, served as director of the poor from 1871 to 1874, and as county auditor from 1884 to 1887. Nearly all his life he was a consistent and useful member of the Reformed church. In his boyhood he learned the trade of brickmaking, which he fol­lowed for some time, and then taught school until he engaged in the mercantile business at Bouquet, Penn township, Westmoreland County, PA, where he continued in that line some eight years, achieving success in his business.
