He graduated at Bucknell University at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and Rochester and Crozer Theological Seminaries. He entered the Baptist ministry, and was a successful pastor; at Berwick, Pittston, Shamokin, and Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania, and also in Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas.

He and his wife had six children.
