General Notes: Husband - Michael Shaffer

He accompanied his parents to Indiana County, Pennsylvania, when they made their settlement in 1838.
He and his ancestors, as far as known, were Evangelical Lutherans. He held nearly all af the township offices.

On Mr. Shaffer's farm, there was at one time, a very marked showing of the trail which, according to the old settlers, was an Indian path from the Cherry Tree to Franklin, Venango County, the latter being called in the early days Fort Venango. In 1858, and some years later, he found twenty lead balls in one of his fields-each weighing about an ounce-within an area of not more than two yards in diameter, and about five inches below the surface. Their appearance indicated that they were never shot. Large quantities of Indian darts were found at several different points on the same tract.
