General Notes: Husband - John Shaffer

He learned the saddlery business with Mr. Felty, of Hanover, Pennsylvania, and for a time he worked for Mr. Wolff, in Chambersburg. In September, 1809, he moved to Washington, Pennsylvania, and started a saddlery and harness business, and he was very successful in its prosecution. His father was a prosperous and successful farmer and a strict member of the Lutheran Church. When his son John joined the Methodist Church, he disinherited him, giving him only one dollar of his money. John Shaffer lived in Washington the remainder of his life, where his hospitable disposition made his house a famous stopping place for Methodist ministers and others. He was a Master Mason, and stood well in the records of his lodge.
