His parents were born in America.
He was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. When twenty-three years old he moved to Butler County and settled near Harmony, where he built his house and conducted a mill for thirty years.
He reared a large family at Harmony, and was well acquainted with Father Rapp, founder of the Harmony Society.
