He was born on his father's homestead in Muddy Creek township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and was reared a farmer. He went to Lawrence County, where he assisted his father in operating the mills for five years. In 1875 he purchased forty acres of the Bauder farm, erected buildings and thereafter devoted his attention to farming. He was a Democrat, and filled the office of school director and other minor positions in his township.

Besides the children listed, he and his wife had three that died in early youth.
