He was born in the same stone house in which he later resided, it being built by his paternal grandfather in 1802. So well was it constructed that the first roof lasted for sixty-six years, and the whole building was in such an excellent state of preservation when it was one hundred years old, that it appeared that it could last another century.
Upon this farm he was reared, and his education was obtained in the neighboring schools, but his advantages were limited, as the farm work extended throughout most of the year. After one season's crops were at last threshed and ready for use, it was only a few weeks before the spring work began, so that he had little time to attend school. Most of his early life was spent under the parental roof, but for two seasons he worked away from home; the first, when eighteen years of age, receiving $10 per month for his services.
After his marriage, he rented his father's farm, and this arrangement continued until October 19, 1871, when he and his brother Christopher bought the homestead, he receiving ninety-two acres when the property was divided. He was obliged to go in debt, but by industry, perseverance and good management, he succeeded in clearing the place of all incumbrances, and made many valuable and useful improvements, his farm eventually becoming now one of the best along Penn's creek, either in Union or Snyder counties.
Both he and his wife were consistent members of the Lutheran Church, taking a leading and active part in its work, he serving as a deacon.
