General Notes: Husband - Henry Schaefer

He was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, and came to the United States in 1850, when nineteen years of age. He already had served in the German army, however, despite his youth. Upon reaching this country he settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and there engaged in a contracting business until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. He then entered Battery G, Fifth Regiment of Pennsylvania Artillery, and later joined the Two Hundred and Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment, after having seen much active service in the former command. He was honorably discharged, March 6, 1865.
He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and a member of the German Evangelical church.
