He engaged in farming all of his life until he retired in 1955. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Knox and later transferred his membership to the Clarion IOOF Lodge. He and his wife attended the Evangelical Church in Lickingville, the Lutheran Church at Knox, and the Mt. Joy Church at Knox.
